The Medical Assistant Certificate of Continuing Study prepares students for a career as a medical assistant, with competency and confidence in the following subjects over 4 weeks of classwork followed by a minimum of a 120-hour internship over 5-6 weeks.

  • Administrative procedures (reception, scheduling)
  • Anatomy and physiology (basic)
  • Clinical procedures and skills
  • Communication skills: Communication for medical assistants
  • Computer skills: Digital literacy, electronic health records
  • CPR certification
  • Customer service
  • Healthcare law and ethics; HIPAA training
  • Math (in medical context)
  • Medical terminology
  • Pharmacology (basic)

Eligible graduates are able to sit for the National Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam.

Additionally, Rhode Island College provides individual counseling with a case manager and professional development that covers resume and cover letter writing, job searching, and practice interviews.

This program is sponsored by the RI Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner and is 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through an award totaling $333,333.3
