About us

environmental stewardship

Westerly Education Center takes environmental stewardship seriously. The facility was built on a former Brownfields site, and this choice was the first expression of WEC’s commitment to the environment — by choosing to bring a contaminated lot into regulatory compliance and restoring the land for fruitful use.

And there's more

All of the landscape plantings in our beds are native, sustainable plants.

Recently, we installed a water bottle filling station to reduce plastic water bottle waste.

The lights are outiftted with motion deterctors and turn off automatically when no one is in the room. The energy efficient lighting fixtures cut down our electric bill, and the toilets are low-flush to conserve water.

In the hands-on area, which is where students learn their new skills in pipefitting and sheet metal, all the scrap metal is recycled.

Recycling and source reduction is an expected practice among guests and staff. We strongly encourage guests to recycle plastic and aluminum beverage containers, clean paper, and cardboard. Reliance on digital files and two-sided paper copies is a fact of life at WEC.
