What is GED?
GED stands for General Educational Development and is equivalent to a high school diploma. Employers and about 99% of colleges accept a GED certificate in place of a diploma.
Students complete coursework and take tests in four subjects: language arts, math, science, and social studies. Exams may be taken all at once or one at a time. GED testing is available at Westerly Education Center, a Pearson testing site.
GED providers are Tri-County Community Action(401‑351‑2750)and Education Exchange (401‑783‑0293) Contact one to find the best option for you.
After completing coursework, schedule your GED test at the Westerly Education Center Pearson testing center. Select “Schedule Your Test,” click G to display the GED exam, select Westerly Education Center and an available date and time. Easy!
- State-approved curriculum that meets Rhode Island DMV requirements
- Includes the RI DMV knowledge exam (permit test) as part of the course
- Open to students ages 15 years 10 months through 21 years
- Classes available at multiple locations across Rhode Island
- Multilingual support available to help all students succeed
Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate that can be presented to the DMV when obtaining a learner’s permit.

Maritime Trades Training at the Westerly Education Center
In Collaboration with Our Anchor Partner, General Dynamics, The Westerly Education Center offers hands-on maritime trades training designed to help students prepare for real careers in shipbuilding and manufacturing, including opportunities with General Dynamics Electric Boat.
Trades Training Offered at WEC:
- Pipefitting
- Electrical
- Sheet Metal
- Paint
- Rigging
These programs focus on building practical skills, workplace readiness, and the industry knowledge needed for success in the maritime trades. Some training programs are designed for pre-employment, while others support individuals who are newly hired.

Training Line-Up for Fall 2026
Process Tech | CCRI offers a 10-week, hands-on Process Technology training program that equips students with skills for careers in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and other process-driven industries.
Medication Aide/ Tech | The CCRI Medication Aide/Tech program provides specialized training in drug administration for healthcare professionals, preparing students for certification in Rhode Island.
Medical Assistant Training | RIC 16‑week Medical Assistant training program typically combines classroom instruction with hands‑on clinical experience, designed to prepare you for entry‑level roles in healthcare settings. The program is often structured into 12 weeks of classroom training and 4 weeks of clinical externship, with about 30 hours of instruction per week
Dental Assistant | This entry-level (non-CDA) Workforce Dental Assisting Program prepares students to perform basic dental assisting skills. This program prepares students to work within Rhode Island as dental assistants and will qualify students to sit for two out of the three DANB certification examinations. This program is a 14-week full-time program and includes an externship.
Pharmacy Technician II | Students will be thoroughly trained in the basic concepts of pharmacy calculations, practice math concepts, and understand calculations needed to become a certified pharmacy technician. In addition to the classroom training of 180 hours, students will need to complete a 120-hour externship.
Microsoft Office Basics| This two-week training includes an introduction to Outlook, Word, One/ Shared Drive, Excel and Power Point. Get hints and tips to get the most out of the software. By the end of the course, you will be able to create professional looking documents. Registration is limited to 15 students!

The Westerly Education Center collaborates with businesses, industry groups, and colleges to deliver training aligned with real jobs and career pathways—often at no cost. Programs range from new skill development to pre-employment and onboarding, with courses updated regularly.
We offer flexible training/ meeting space and can work with you and our partners to customize programs to meet your workforce needs. With 21 rooms, strong partnerships with Rhode Island colleges, and experienced staff, our facility is an ideal location for professional development.
Courses—offered by URI, CCRI, RIC, and RISD Continuing Education—cover topics from basic computer skills to advanced training, leadership, and certifications.
