Teacher Assistant Training NOW ENROLLING

Working as a teacher assistant in kindergarten-to-grade 12 classrooms full-time, part-time, or as a substitute teacher assistant requires training. A teaching assistant, teacher's aide, or education assistant is an individual who assists a teacher with instructional and classroom responsibilities. CCRI will be offering its teacher assistant training in Westerly for 6.5 weeks from 6-9 p.m. starting March 16, 2020. Topics are:

  • roles and responsibilties of the teacher assistant
  • human development
  • diversity
  • special education
  • basic rights
  • school health and safety
  • instructional process
  • school laws
  • computer and technology skills
  • positive classroom climate
  • team-building

This course will be held in the evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Westerly Education Center, 23 Friendship Street. Applications will be accepted through February 14. The certificate is recognized by the Rhode island Department of Education, and the course is free for persons who meet eligibility requirements. Proof of income is required, as is a BCI. Tuition waivers are made possible for this program by the Rhode Island Office of Housing and Community Development. The Community Development Block Grant awarded to the Town of Westerly requires enrollment of income-eligible citizens living in Washington County.
