Maritime Rigging – RI

Course description

Students enrolled in the Maritime Rigging course gain the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience necessary for employment at General Dynamics Electric Boat. This course is designed to prepare individuals for work in maritime manufacturing environments, specifically focusing on the responsibilities of a rigger.

The curriculum emphasizes industry-relevant rigging techniques and practices. Participants are introduced to key topics such as workplace safety, the proper use of tools and equipment, binding methods, chafing gear, rigging hardware, and the use of slings and hoists. Instruction also includes the operation of pendant cranes and the application of basic rigging calculations necessary for safe and effective material handling.

Beyond technical skills, the course integrates essential workplace readiness competencies. Participants are expected to demonstrate critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, and leadership throughout the program. Emphasis is placed on executing work that is procedurally compliant, meets quality standards, and is completed on time and within budget —  all expectations of the shipbuilding industry.

This course is taught by experienced instructors from CCRI and combines both classroom instruction and hands-on training. It is designed to support workforce development and to prepare participants for successful employment in one of Rhode Island’s key manufacturing sectors.
