About us

Empowering Education, Workforce Development, and Lifelong Learning

Founded in 2017, The Westerly Education Center (WEC) is a unique public-private partnership dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and strengthening Rhode Island’s workforce. Managed by the Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Education, WEC connects higher education, industry, and community partners to help individuals achieve degrees, certifications, and industry-recognized credentials.

Learning Opportunities for Every Stage of Life

WEC serves learners of all ages—from high school students and working professionals to retirees pursuing personal enrichment. Our modern facility offers access to:

  • College and university courses
  • Workforce development and certification programs
  • Professional training and continuing education
  • Arts and design classes
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education
  • Lifelong learning opportunities

With state-of-the-art classrooms, mobile computer lab, and science laboratories, students gain practical skills and knowledge that support both personal and professional growth.

Strong Partnerships, Real Opportunities

Our collaborations with Rhode Island’s public and private colleges, universities, and training providers create accessible pathways to higher education and career advancement. Through these partnerships, students can earn academic credits, professional certificates, and workforce credentials aligned with today’s industry demands.

Customized Training for Businesses

WEC is more than an educational facility—it’s a workforce development partner. Businesses and organizations can:

  • Rent classrooms and meeting spaces
  • Host employee training programs
  • Develop customized trainings
  • Collaborate with higher education partners on specialized workforce solutions

Building Rhode Island’s Maritime Workforce

One of WEC’s most impactful initiatives is its partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat and the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). Together, these organizations deliver hands-on maritime and manufacturing training programs that prepare individuals for careers supporting the nation’s submarine defense industry.

Featuring full-scale submarine mock-ups within the training facility, students gain real-world experience in an immersive environment that combines classroom instruction with practical application.
