This course prepares participants with the pipefitting skills and knowledge for industry employment requiring the application of basic maritime pipefitting knowledge in manufacturing environments dedicated to the production of vessels for the U.S. Navy. The course covers pipe terminology and abbreviations, reading and interpreting trade specific drawings, using specific hand and power tools, understanding the key elements contained in a work package, mastering pipe bend data, installing hangers, preparing pipes for welded socket and butt joint fit-up, etc.
This is a free course that mixes hands-on education with classroom instruction. Community College of Rhode Island instructors, most of whom have worked at Electric Boat, lead the courses in essential skills. The small class size and frequent interaction with the instructor and teacher’s assistant enable students to have a more personalized experience.
This is an ideal workforce development course for anyone interested in pursuing a career in shipbuilding at General Dynamics Electric Boat, which is one of the nation’s premier defense contractors building and delivering submarines critically important to the United States Navy. Trainings take place at Westerly Education Center, Westerly, RI.
